A4E calls on the judiciary to seriously tackle cases of domestic violence. The current case of Nathalie Williams emphasises the need to curtail these cases in their early stages by avoiding the issue of suspended sentences. Six years ago a suspended sentence was handed to her aggressor. Such sentences only serve to ‘suspend’ the quality of life for the victim, whilst the perpetrator continues with their normal everyday life.

This was a case of violence in its most brutal form and we expect that the aggressor is given the harshest sentence possible. In doing so, the judiciary should give a clear message of zero tolerance towards violence on women. The horror of intimate partner violence should never be diluted and victim blaming should be avoided at all costs.
